The panic is over for people with a sweet tooth, or those who are partial to distilled water from overseas, and live on the Turks and Caicos Islands of the British West Indies, as the proposal to raise the duty tax on these products has now been decided against.
The initial idea behind the increase was introduced by customs advisor Geoff Thorne, who also wanted to raise duty on ice creams and sugary drinks- unhealthy food items that have contributed- and still continue to do so- to the rise of obesity. As for the distilled water, Thorne had in mind the protection of local businesses that produce it, rather than sourcing it from other countries and neglecting to support the local economy. Instead of the increases, the Governor’s Advisory Council have instead lowered the tax on products needed for water production to 2.5 percent, helping local businesses by reducing their costs.
