For Law Enforcement Officers in California, calling upon other agencies or staff to collect DNA from a crime scene is a thing of a past. The new initiative, which is now is full swing across the Pacific Grove area, has seen all Officers issued within their own mini forensic kit, meaning that they’re able to collect important evidence more quickly- making it more reliable-than has been possible in the past, when waiting some time for a third party to arrive at the scene was the observed practice.
The staff at Pacific Grove Police Department have been trained in the use of the basic kit, and will continue to learn about new DNA collecting initiatives as time goes on.
Detective Meghan Bliss told Kion 46, “Our database is expanding so much. It’s growing substantially and so we are much more likely, as we collect more and more DNA samples, that we’ll be able to solve more crimes”.
The kit includes Q-tips (cotton wool swabs), distilled water, and boxes to place the Q-tips in once the evidence has been collected. The distilled water is dropped onto the swab, which is then wiped across the surface or piece of evidence, ready to be send off to the lab for examination.
If you’ve caught wind of any fantastic innovations that involve the use of distilled water, please do get in touch, and we’ll be glad to feature your contribution in our blog.
