The Importance of Hygiene in Medical Practice

While technological advancements have made healthcare facilities a lot safer, a report by BMJ Quality and Safety outlines that almost 12,000 deaths in hospitals in England are actually preventable. The report also claims that the high mortality rates are due to negligence, with lack of patient monitoring, hygiene in medical practice, misdiagnosis and mistakes in the replacements of fluids or medication.

Healthcare Providers Conduit in Spreading Disease

An in-depth report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) claims that health-care workers often act as a conduit for the spread of many illnesses and infections such as:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Chest/respiratory infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Surgical site infections

The WHO also reports that Health Care-Associated Infections (HAI) can be prevented with proper hand hygiene because regularly washing your hands with disinfectant and pure water kills off the microbes that cause HAI.

The Importance of Purified Water in the Medical Industry

Unlike anywhere else, the medical industry uses a great deal of purified water across the board. Due to its high purity, it doesn’t contain some of the toxins that are responsible for corroding hospital equipment. This means that it can be used to properly clean tools used for invasive procedures. However, its uses don’t just stop there.

Distilled Water and Cell Culture Applications

Long before some of the advancements we have today, all therapeutic treatment used on cancer patients were first tested on animals. As issues of animal rights became mainstream and costs rose, more humane methods were sought out, which would provide the same, if not better, results. As doctors researched, they found that the best alternative is a tissue cell culture.

Instead of using an animal, scientists began to grow tissue in petri dishes using artificial blood known as cell culture media, which was basically purified water and some added ingredients that sustain life. Distilled water was the number one choice, as it contained no impurities that could damage the cells.

Creating a safe medical environment

Research has shown that using purified water in the medical industry is increasing the safety of patients and providing a safe alternative to animal testing. Its uses can’t be underestimated, as it can be applied across the board, especially by doctors and nurses who have frequent contact with patients who are susceptible to contracting diseases that might turn out to be very deadly.
