NASA finds use for the Distilling Process

Astronauts now make their own distilled waterIt’s not easy living in space. Your centre of gravity is all off, you’re floating around in cramped spaces, having to work under pressure on very important missions for the greater good of man kind, and to top it all off, you’re having to make your own distilled water from….yes, you guessed it, your own pee.
For scientists working on the International Space Station, acquiring and storing fresh supplies of water has always been an issue. With transportation of water to the station becoming increasingly expensive, and having to do so frequently because of lack of storage space on board, NASA have been searching for other ways in which to reuse and recycle the resources that the crew already have. The ECLSS water recycling system now installed, uses a three step process; the first, to filter out particles and debris, the second, passing the liquid through a membrane to remove impurities, and the third, an oxidisation process to kill bacteria. Not only are the crew able to wash in and drink the water while on the ISS, but this technology will be essential for those going on long distance space journeys in the future, perhaps to Mars and other far away planets.
