Distilled Water Plant Uncovered in Weymouth

weymouth once had a distilled water plantMayor of Weymouth and Portland, Paul Kimber, recently uncovered a detailed scaled drawing of a naval base in the area that was fully functioning during the Second World War. Mr Kimber stumbled across the papers by chance whilst clearing out the Mayor’s Parlour ahead of plans for redecoration of the rooms, when he came across a thick wad of paper which turned out to be a study of the former Portland Naval Base.
View reported that the plans showed that on site were 26 giant oil tanks, a railway stopping at Victoria Square station before going on to Easton, a Royal Navy hospital, married police quarters, a building which made distilled water for ships, a sea plane shed, submarine pens and buildings where secret work was carried out on underwater weapons.
The Mayor now plans to fund the framing and hanging of the plan in either his offices or in the new Weymouth Museum, to give officials and local residents a feel for what life would have been like in the area during WWII.
